A Rich Coastal

History

Pawleys Island began as a summer retreat for rice planters from nearby river plantations, who sought fresh sea air during the warmer months. Families would bring furnishings and goods to the island each May and stay until the first frost of November.

Today, twelve historic homes from the late 1700s to mid-1800s still stand, preserving the island’s heritage. Visitors can still feel the island’s unique rhythm: barefoot days, quiet sunsets, crabbing in the creeks, and stories of generations past.
